An excerpt from Filmmakers and Financing: Business Plans for Independents by Louise Levison...

CONTROLLING YOUR DESTINY

In addition to being creative and passionate, a filmmaker must be a businessman. It is no accident that they call it "show business" -- not "show art"...People go into independent filmmaking for many reasons. They are driven primarily by the subject matter, theme or style of the pictures they want to make.

I have talked to hundreds of people who have told me what types of films they want to make, and no two people have had the same vision or goals. They all share one particular goal, though--to own their project and control it.

Once a filmmaker forms a company for that purpose (whether for one film or several), it is up to him or her to understand how the business functions. Your goal may not be feature films at all. Instead, you may focus on other types of films, videos or other products. All of these are important and the principles stated in this book apply equally to them.
